Review: 2012 Green Fin Red Table Wine

At a Friendsgiving dinner this weekend, I was told that the Green Fin Red Table Wine from Trader Joe’s would be the best under $5 wine I’ve ever had.

This red blend is pretty simple. It’s drinkable, but not great. It’s got tart berry and a hint of vanilla, but not much else and the bottle doesn’t let you know what kind of red grapes were used to make the blend. Can I think of a better under $5 wine that I’ve had? Not off the top of my head, but if I did an under $5 wine tasting night (party idea!), I think this would come in with the middle of the pack.

An interesting notable about this blend: it’s certified organic by CCOF, a USDA-accredited certifier. According to CCOF:

Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Organic food is produced without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, sewage sludge, bioengineering (GMOs),  or ionizing radiation.

Another interesting fact: Green Fin is a brand from the makers of Franzia, the boxed wine best known as the staple of sorority mixers.

Nuts and Bolts

  • Winery: Green Fin
  • Type: Red blend
  • Origin: Madera, Calif.
  • Vintage: 2012
  • Price: $3.99
  • Alcohol content: 12%
  • When to drink: This cheap red blend would be great for sipping around a bonfire before snuggling up in a sleeping bag for a night of camping in the crisp outdoors.

Hmm, I don’t work for Green Fin, so your inquiry may best be served by reaching out directly to the winemaker. Perhaps call your local Trader Joe’s even?

Trader Joes is out of Green Fin Red Organic Wine. I have called three Trader Joe Stores. I live in Central California. Does anyone know where I can get more. Having a reception.

Hi Jane: This is probably to late for you, but wine-searcher.com is a great resource when you’re trying to find where you can buy a particular bottle of wine. It also is a good first stop when comparing prices. Best of luck!

          Hi Gene,
Or did anyone ever find out how to get a case of the Green Fin wine shipped?
I would be interested also, as we do not have the TJ Wine section here in PA.

This is a great even handed wine, not pretentious, just smooth and pleasant. Have it at the end of the day when you just want to relax… The interesting thing is that the Green Fin line appears to be a Trader Joe’s private label. Designed to replace the Barefoot brand when they stopped selling to Joe’s—but that is speculation on my part. That’s great part of having the buying horse power that Joes’s has. The sad thing is a Joe’s private label prone to change, if customers don’t buy it, it goes away. There is a Green Fin Table Wine drought right now, oh please, let it come back…

I love this wine for nightly sipping. Organic and smooth with a nice balanced red wine blend taste. This wine impressed me. For $4.99 a bottle, you certainly can’t go wrong!

I am not a huge fan of wine or any other alcoholic beverages and I am not a fan of sweet wines, but for some reason, this is a very comforting and tasty, slightly sweet, red. It goes well with a tray of salami and sharp cheeses or just for sipping in the evening. I was told by my doctor to drink a glass of red wine every night so I have been trying to follow his instructions. I have tried several and basically I have resorted to just buying red blends because without doing the homework, it is hard to know what year was a great cab, pinot noir or petite sirah, and am I not actually interested in making my evening glass a major investment. I tried this because it is organic and I can get headaches from chemicals in wine and was hoping this didn’t have them. Try it, it is light and friendly, not something for your friends who are willing to pay big bucks for wine, but great for a small gathering of friends and a good movie. I definitely will buy this again and may make it my usual evening wine.

Tip: Drink as much or more water as you do wine. Red wine dehydrates and can cause a headache.

Just had some tonight and was pleasantly surprised. Was looking for a daily wine that won’t break the bank, and I think I’ve found it.

I usually just go into trader joe’s to get Indian frozen dinners and juice…I stay away from cheaper wines but my dad likes them. Was very pleased with this wine for 4 bucks. It’s like Barefoot was a few years ago before they became overly commercialized.

This is an AMAZING wine at an even more AMAZING price. Most stores only carry 1 or 2 wines made with Organic grapes. Often, they aren’t the best. This wine is DELICIOUS. It’s $3.99 at Trader Joe’s. TRY IT! You will not regret it.
